How Hard Is Garden Center At Lowes Reddit

How is it working in garden center

I already work at Lowes but apparently our garden center is desperate for associates but I was told it's the most easy job in the store but if they're incredibly short on help thats hard to believe

It's the worse, I'm a cashier and I see the guys all exhausted from putting 50 bags of mulch or 30 of the big stones 16inch in cars plus the sun ;)

Agreed. Especially during spring/summer. When I got the position I was excited, because like many others, I love plants. But the job has little to do with plants. It's really just a loader position. Winter is not too bad. But during summer you can expect to come home each day covered in dirt with a sore body. "Yes, I'd like 65 bags of red premium mulch hand loaded into my car please."

I worked garden center for a few months and remember hearing it'd be easy, they lied. It's easily the most or second most physically demanding department. The passive upkeep is insane and you'll be doing 40 hours minimum (even as a part time or seasonal worker). The work is grueling, but if you love really hard work it's actually pretty fun. I moved to a new department and would avoid garden in the future

I was told "it's mostly watering plants" because it would be opening shift

I was disappointed I couldn't get outdoors bc I'm a plant nerd (I'm in tools). I helped out islg and oslg a bunch this Summer. It blows. We don't even get any cool plants anyways, and it's a ton of loading and angry boomers. Not fun.

It's brainless but an understaffed garden center is always a hellscape.

Unless you are willing to do a 100+ bags of mulch a day its not exactly easy

I want to work there year round. Sick of working front end.

I used to work in garden center. There's a great deal of heavy lifting involved (garden tile, bags of mulch/fertilizer). But on the other hand, watering the plants can put you in a pretty zen mood for most of your shift so long as nothing overly stupid happens. And a good number of the people who ask for help carrying out heavy objects tip you afterward. That's been my experience anyway.

I know in the past to become a SM or above you HAD to work that area because it was so demanding, one thing I noticed, never saw a single SM, DSM, or OSM anywhere near that area. They would avoid it like having to get carts.

Lots of physical work, lots of customers, a lot of managers yelling at you because the pallets of soil aren't perfectly lined up during the busiest time of the year, lots of managers yelling at you because the pallets of soil have small holes in the shrink wrap

If you don't mind a constant workout in the sun its not that bad. However, if your store has a continuous flow of bitter, entitled old people that will snap at you for the smallest things, its rough.

As far as it being the easiest job in the store, that is an outright lie.

I'm in the garden center and I'm the minority that loves it.

You get left outside for hours by yourself while you are constantly calling for the head cashier to come discount the plants and people complaining they can't see the card reader through the plexi glass.

If it's anything like my store be prepared to be the only loader on some days loading shit loads of 50+ pound bags and bricks. It's way shittier than tools was that's for sure
